Atlas Insurance ICT team wins programming competition

Congratulations to the Atlas Insurance Information Systems team who were the overall winners of the ICTSA Programming Competition for the second year running.  The team was led by Karl Fenech together with Robert Cassar, David Briffa and Antoine Galea. Well done!

They competed against other teams who mainly hailed from the IT industry with other competitors coming from other different industries such as telephony and financial services.  In addition, there were 11 other teams from University and Sixth Form colleges.  The Atlas team won this competition in emphatic style obtaining double the points of the second placed team.

The teams competed for cash prizes, trophies and pride. All entries were judged by three members of the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta, and the winners were announced on Friday 25 February at an award winning ceremony at Villa Bighi in Kalkara.  This event was attended by students, academics and industry representatives.

This year’s competition required teams to write a software program for a robot landing on Mars with a 360-degree camera. The program was required to take any map of the terrain as well as the robot’s landing spot and produce a sequence of movement instructions which maximizes the photographed land on Mars within a short period of time after landing. Programs were judged using a selection of maps to compare the performance and map coverage of the robot using the movement instructions generated.
